An open source tool for 3d model tiling

GitHub - rusty-tiles

Disclaimer: rusty-tiles is entirely generated by AI (combination of Grok 4.6 and GPT Astra). It has only been tested on my personal data so I cannot guarantee how well it will work for you

Have you wanted to convert your 3d models to 3d tiles format for free, all locally? Well now you can (I hope).

I’d like to share rusty-tiles, a fully open-sourced, MIT licenced, to generate 3d tiles from GLB/GLtf models, terrain tilesets from DEMs, and 3d vector tiles from GeoJSON files. The last two are still provisional, especially since 3d vector tiles are not fully finalised as far as I know. Oh and did I mention it is written in rust in an attempt to stay super trendy.

I have created the tool to preserve visual fidelity at the highest HLOD. No idea if this is a good idea or not for general use cases but it is what I needed for mine.

In the future I’d like to extend capabilities to both point clouds and gaussian splats and probably clean up some of the georefrencing tooling. If you feel like giving a hand feel free to contribute. Looking to add more contributors to the project to make it more sustainable. It’s pretty fast already from my testing but I’d love to see if there are further optimisations that can be made.
