OGC API - Tiles support following MVT support

Hi Cesium team,

Following the new support for Mapbox Vector Tiles (MVT), are there any plans to support OGC API - Tiles?

More specifically, would CesiumJS support consuming MVT tiles using the WorldCRS84Quad tile matrix set (EPSG:4326), rather than only the typical Web Mercator tile matrix?

Hey, good question.

For the CRS84 part, MVT in CesiumJS is Web Mercator only right now. MVTDataProvider builds on UrlTemplate3DTilesDataProvider, and that provider fixes the tiling scheme to WebMercatorTilingScheme. It doesn’t expose a tile-matrix-set or projection option, so WorldCRS84Quad / EPSG:4326 isn’t supported today.

For OGC API - Tiles, I couldn’t find a public issue or tracked plan for it. The nearest related work is the OGC API - Features request (#12456) and this vector tiles issue, but neither covers OGC API - Tiles or the WorldCRS84Quad tile matrix. You can open a feature request describing your use case, since concrete use cases feed into how these get prioritized.

With that feature request, you should be specific as to if you are looking to consume a full OGC API - Tiles service (the tile-matrix-set metadata and all), or mainly CRS84 MVT tiles from a {z}/{x}/{y}-style source. Those are slightly different asks, so knowing which would make the request more useful.
