Hello,
I would like to implement a LOD mechanism to display vector POIs.
The density of POIs should be high near the camera and decreasing with
the distance: far POIs should be aggregated.
Would using a QuadtreePrimitive to create Billboards /
BillboardCollections on the fly makes sense?
Have someone tried this strategy / have some performance numbers?
The QuadtreePrimitive is currently private, will it change in the future?
Cheers,
Hi,
That’s a reasonable use-case for the QuadtreePrimitive. BillboardCollection may not be ideal, because BillboardCollection is designed to handle changing billboards, and the set of billboards in a QuadtreeTile will be created once and never touched again. Unfortunately Cesium doesn’t have anything better for billboards currently, as far as I know.
We’re reserving the right to change QuadtreePrimitive in the future (that’s why it’s private), but we don’t have any near-term plans to do so.
Kevin
Hello,
Thank you Kevin for the insights; I will have a try.

Hi,
I’ve started tackling the QuadTreePrimitive lately, with some issues.
Did you pursue this venue?
Hi,
Not yet started. What did you run into?
Since I have only a few tens of thousand POIs, I will first try filtering
them out at the shader level.
