PMTiles in 3DTiles 2.0?

Reffering to “Help Shape Vector Data Support in 3D Tiles”, I would have thought PMTiles MVT could be a candidate implementation.

Hello @Yves_Moisan!

To my understanding, PMTiles is single-file archive containing pre-tiled data, indexed by XYZ coordinates, such that individual tiles can be fetched by HTTP Range requests. Importantly, the tiles are arranged on a 2D surface (XY) with hierarchical levels of detail (Z), and the tiles themselves are not arranged in 3D space as in 3D Tiles. For that reason, I’m not sure embedding a 2D PMTiles tileset into a 3D Tiles tileset would make sense, if that’s what you were asking?

But that’s not to say that Cesium runtimes couldn’t consider support for loading PMTiles tilesets. There is (early, experimental) support for MVT tilesets in CesiumJS today. As the tile content in PMTiles is already MVT, supporting PMTiles would mainly be a change in the network fetching implementation, I think.

Or if there’s something else that you want or need to do with PMTiles that this wouldn’t cover, or that you can’t do with the proposed 3D Tiles features, please let us know!
