New website: Geo3D Global Library - geology

Hi everyone!

I am new here. My name is Zbigniew and I have been using Cesium.js for like 2 months. I would like to present here the effect of my work.

For couple of years we have been developing at the Polish Geological Survey a little web app called Geo3D, the web-based viewer for geological structures - it allows to disseminate 3D geological maps and models to fellow geologists and to general public. One thing Geo3D always lacked was a proper globe or map intro to show where the models are located. After short experiments with Google Maps and globe.gl, I finally found Cesium.js and it turned out to be the perfect match for what we needed in Geo3D!

By chance, a colleague came up with a very catchy name for the viewer’s newest evolution: Geo3D Global Library. This was briliant and it was followed instantly by an idea to present not just our own Geo3D models, but a wider collection of online 3D geological visualizations from around the world.

And here we are! A clean and simple Cesium globe with locations, links, and basic metadata for each of 110+ geological models that are available online: https://geo3d.pgi.gov.pl/Global_Library/index.html

Do we have all 3D geological models ever published online? Definitely not, but I’m on a quest to find them all! If you know of any other web-based 3D geological viewers out there, I’d really appreciate if you could point them out. I will add them to the collection based on Cesium.js globe.

Big thanks to the Cesium.js team for providing such a great tool - your work made this project possible!

I would appreciate your feedback. I am sure the website can be improved with your critical input.

Best regards,
Zbigniew

Hi Zbigniew. It is good to see CesiumJS being used to make more data accessible.

The one suggestion I have is to make the regions clickable. My first instinct was to click on the region to get more information about it. It took a few tries to realize that I had to click on the label to get that info.

Very cool project!

Thanks for your comment!

The regions/outlines were originally clickable, but things got messy when two or more overlapped. So I switched to using active labels only. I know it might feel a bit counterintuitive at first, but it’s easy to get used to—and the learning curve isn’t too steep

There’s still more to add, both in terms of content and features.

[EDIT]: I added a tolltip “Please click on labels” poping up when user clicks on region/polygon. I hope this will make the start easier.

Kind regards,
Zbigniew
