Last spring, missing New York, I started to play around with point cloud data from the 2017 NYC LiDAR Capture. Here’s a 3D pointillist map of the city: NYC in Pointillism. Along the way, I learned a lot about Mapbox, PDAL, Cesium, deck.gl, and loaders.gl!
I put together another map telling the story of how I was inspired to do this work and describing my process: Impression, NYC. I look forward to sharing more thoughts on the techniques and aesthetics of working with point cloud data and tools, if people are curious!
