Hello,
I am working on uploading 2D and 3D Models from a dwg file to Cesium ion using Cesium ion Plugin in 3ds Max 2023. The issue is, that there is too much data loss after its conversion to Cesium supported format. The uploaded model is completely different from what I have.
Can anyone explain that is there any missing configuration that needs to be done before upload? Attaching screenshots for reference
Thanks
For reference:
Asset ID is 2729111
Interesting. Thanks for reporting this.
Would it be possible to export to FBX from 3DS Max and see if the geometry looks the same? The Cesium ion Plugin uses 3DS Max’s FBX exporter then uploads that to ion. Viewing the direct export will let us narrow this issue down.
If it is the case that the FBX itself is missing the geometry, there are some other workflows we can look at.
Thanks!
Hi Cory,
Thanks for your swift response. I have exported the dwg file to fbx and then opened it again in 3ds max, the geometry seems fine.
Attaching the fbx file for your reference:

Hi Alihasan,
Good to hear it’s working when loaded back into 3DS Max.
I’ve noticed on occasion that sometimes in an FBX only 3DS Max can display the geometry and materials. Other viewers can’t. To see if that’s the case, I tested the model in the Windows 3D Viewer. I see the same result as what’s seen in ion:
To dig a little deeper, I opened it in Blender. I get essentially the same result:
Given that, it looks like 3DS Max is encoding part of the FBX in such a way that only 3DS Max can parse it. I can see two ways forward:
- Reach out to the Autodesk community to see if they can help understand how to alter the model so other FBX viewers can read it. Then the Cesium ion plugin should work.
- See if another piece of software can export the DWG to a model other viewers can read. I’ve found Fusion 360 to be a very good exporter of CAD formats to FBX. Then the FBX can be uploaded to Cesium ion.
Let us know if you have additional questions or info. If any of the above work, please let us and future readers know.
